The sound use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in society, economy and the environment is a recurring challenge for research. In the Seventh Framework Programme the European Commission selected the support action “Building the European Research Area in the field of ICT for Environmental Sustainability” in which one of the main objectives is expanding and shaping a corresponding European Research Area (ERA). This Workshop provides information on the state of the art of Environmental Informatics and the existing community, building an ERA in this field. In presentation slots, some branches of environment and ICT-relevant areas of application will be addressed. Together with free contributions from workshop participants shall be discussed:
- Which specific areas should the European Research Area in the field of ICT for Environmental Sustainability include?
- Which similar activities and/or research programmes are existing in European countries?
- How to structure, organize and strengthen the ERA in the field of ICT for Environmental Sustainability?
The new FP7 project “ICT for Environmental Sustainability Research (ICT-ENSURE) ” provides an opportunity to include the workshop results for further discussion in the annual EnviroInfo conferences, in recommendations for a “Single Information Space in Europe for the Environment (SISE) and in future FP7 calls for tenders. iEMSs Conference participants are very welcome to join and enrich the European network of the Environmental Informatics Community and to contribute with their experience and ideas to the European research landscape. and for the use in the EC unit “ICT for Sustainable Growth” of DG INFSO & Media.
