The Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) is a research centre established in October 2006 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (the Catalan Autonomous Government) within the framework of the Research Centres Network Programme (CERCA) which has the following aims: to develop research, knowledge transfer and innovation projects related to all aspects of the complete cycle of water and its management; to train researchers and technicians highly specialized in the field of water. The institute aims to undertake high quality research of international significance by attracting talented scientists who will aim to place the centre amongst the leading research institutions. It is hoped that the ICRA will become a meeting point both for public and private organizations working in water research and management, and for researchers with the society at large.

The Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (LEQUIA) is part of the Department of Chemical and Agricultural Engineering and Agrofood Technology (EQATA) and of the Environmental Institute, both departments belonging to the University of Girona (UdG). LEQUIA have been doing research and working in the application of waste effluent treatment technologies and in environmental pollution prevention for more than 10 years. The diversity of LEQUIA members training allows them to provide solutions for various environmental problems, some of which are highly complex because of the different factors involved. LEQUIA people has close scientific contact with many research groups specializing in different fields ranging from Artificial Intelligence to Ecology of Water Streams; this scientific network allows them to bring successful approaches to the resolution of environmental problems. The activity of LEQUIA is organised into the following areas of interest, both for research purposes, as well as for technology transfer to industrial enterprises: Environmental management, Valuations of waste or by-products, Optimization of effluent treatment technologies, and Process modelling and simulation.

The Caja de Ahorros y Pensiones de Barcelona, ”la Caixa” was established in 1990 as a result of the merger of Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros de Cataluña y Baleares, founded in 1904, and Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Barcelona, founded in 1844, and it is therefore the lawful universal successor to the personality of those institutions, namely their nature, aims, rights and obligations. It was established as a non-profit financial institution providing beneficent, community services with a private board of trustees, and is separate from any company or entity.
Since its beginnings, "la Caixa" was primarily dedicated to family saving and to offer all its clients an insurance for old age, when this type of welfare service still did not exist in Spain. Thus, since its origins, "la Caixa" has been characterised by a strong social commitment and a vocation to work in favour of the general interest, both through its financial activity and its Welfare Projects, which finance and maintain activities of a social, cultural and scientific nature. This vocation to serve has been maintained and consolidated throughout this period. The Knowledge Engineering and Machine Learning Group (KEMLG) belongs to the public Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). KEMLG main goals are the analysis, design, implementation and application of various artificial intelligence techniques in relation to complex real-world systems and domains, such as collaboration environments for strategic innovation, wastewater treatment management, environmental processes, health, cultural heritage, education and tourism.
