Description
The need to better understand environmental problems and systems, towards more efficient decision making, has created the need for the use of models in the environmental domain. Decisions and policy making should serve the needs of citizens for a better quality of life and a safer environment via achieving sustainability. On this basis, modern computational methods are required in environmental modeling that involve advanced simulation capabilities and may support domain knowledge extraction and key parameter forecasting. In addition, extreme physical phenomena and other sources of sudden and severe environmental pressures call for near real time modeling, information provision and decision making. Moreover, the complex behavior of environmental systems requires for a coupled analysis involving different models on different time and space scales (global to local level as well as climate scenarios to short term forecasting), and covering different physical and chemical phenomena. Observation and monitoring of the environment using the whole variety of sensors, from satellites to ensembles of microsensors, provide with the necessary basis for evaluation of model results and can be used directly for their real-time improvement through techniques like data assimilation. These are the issues addressed by the proposed session, which aims to attract scientists and decision makers alike.
