Ulises Cortés is a Full-Professor and Researcher of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) since 1982 (tenured since 1988 and habilitated as Full-Professor since 2006) working on several areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Computer Science (formerly Software Department) including knowledge acquisition for and concept formation in knowledge-based systems, as well as on machine learning and in autonomous intelligent agents . Since 1989 Professor Cortés and his group have been applying their work in Artificial Intelligence to Environmental Sciences in special to Wastewater Treatment Plants with the financial support of CICyT and CIRIT and the European Union.
He is a co-founder of SISLTECH and member of its Board of Directors since 2011.

In collaboration with the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau from 1999 until 2007, Ulises was working in the development and deployment of CARREL: An Agent Mediated Institution for the Exchange of Human Tissues among Hospitals for Transplantation". And in collaboration with Hospital Santa Lucia (Rome) and University of Málaga since 2001, he is working in the development and deployment of e-Tools: Assistive technologies for the disabled and for the new generation of senior citizens.
Since 2011 he works with Prof. Pablo Rudomín (CINVESTAV) studing nocicepetive mechanisms in mamals.

Since 2017 he is the Research Manager of the High Performace Artificial Intelligence group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center .

Since 1998 until 2012, he is the Coordinator of the Artificial Intelligence Ph.D. program for the Technical University of Catalonia. Since, 2012, Prof. Cortés is Deputy vicerector for European Research or the Technical University of Catalonia. Since 2007 and until 2012, Professor Cortés was the Academic Coordinator of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. He is the Academic Coordinator for the Inter-universitary Master programme on Artificial Intelligence from 2011 (he was from 2005 to 2010) and was appointed vice-dean for International Relations at Barcelona School of Informatics from 1993 to 1998.

Since 2012 Ulises is a member of the Mexican "Sistema Nacional de Investigadores" with a Nivel III. He was awarded with the Advanced Research Accreditation by Agència per a la Qualitat del Sistema Universitari de Catalunya in 2004 as well as appointed to the CLUSTER chair at the École Polytecnique Fédérale de Laussane (EPFL) for the academic course 1998-1999.

Professor Cortés advised 22 PhD. Thesis, two of them have been awarded with the ECCAI AI Dissertation Award, and more than 20 Master Thesis in the field of Artificial Intelligence and has more than 50 papers in international journals and more than 150 papers in Conferences and Workshops in the same period. Several of his former PhD students are now internationally known AI scientists. Ulises has been guest editor for special issues in several international journals susch as: AiCommunications, Journal of Computer-aided and Civil Engineering, Computación y Sistemas, Environmental Modelling & Software, Applied Intelligence: The International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, and Complex Problem-Solving Technologies, and International Journal of Approximate Reasoning

Professor Cortés is a Chief Co-Editor of   Computación y Sistemas, the Research on Computing Science, as well as co-founder and co-organizer of the following workshops: Workshop on Binding Environmental Sciences and Artificial Intelligence (BESAI),  Workshop on  Bayesian and Causal networks, from inference to Data Mining (CANEW), and Workshop on Agents Applied in Health Care.

From 1994 to 2004 and from 2005 to the date he coordinated the teaching of the Artificial Intelligence undergraduate courses at Software Department.

Ulises, was the CLUSTER General Secretary from July 2005 to June 2006 and, from 1996 to 1998, the UPC's representative in the Department of Information Theory and Technology: Computers and Communications of CLUSTER. From 1991 until November of 2006 he represented the UPC's at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional and at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in México. In 1998, the Rector appointed him to represent the Technical University of Catalonia in the NAFTA countries and from 1999 until November 2006 he managed the UPC's relationships with the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT, México).

He coordinated the activities of the Chair IPN-UPC. Funded by SERFIN-SANTANDER. From May of 2005 until November of 2006. 

He is a founder member of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA). Since 1998 until 2002 he has been member of the ACIA Board of Directors.

Since July 2002 he has been appointed member of the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence Board ( ECCAI ). From August 2006 he is vicepresident of the ECCAI Board.

He was the coordinator of the "Agentcities" (DEP-2003-00024) a finalist application to the   Descartes Prize 2003.


 

Ulises Cortés is a founder member of the Centre for Internet Applications (CANET) (1997) and was member of the Board of Directors until 2002. Professor Cortés from 1999 until 2001 co-ordinated with Ramon Sangüesa the Applications Task Force of I2CAT.

He was the representative of Faculty of Computer Science in Spanish Federation Computer Science Societies (FESI) since 1995 until 1998.
