Jordi Cortadella, director of the Department of Computer Science

On April 7 took place the appointment of Jordi Cortadella Fortuny as director of the Department of Computer Science, of which is the head since February 2013. As such, he led the process of unit name change, formerly known as the Departament de Llenguatges i Sistemes Informàtics.

After a proposal, promoted by the department’s PDI and approved by the Governing Council on 21 July 2014, the new nomenclature CS has prevailed in an international scale, better describing the activities developed by the academic unit.

PhD in Computer Science from UPC and university professor, Jordi Cortadella has been previously vice-dean of the Facultat d’Informàtica de Barcelona (FIB), Chairman of the Comissió de Selecció i Avaluació de Professors i Investigadors de la Universitat (CSAPIU) and member of the Doctoral Committee of the UPC.

As a teacher, he has taught at the FIB and the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics (FME) in the field of algorithms and programming. As a researcher, develops research in the fields of algorithms and the design of nanoelectronic circuits, work done within the research group Algorismia, Bioinformàtica, Complexitat i Mètodes Formals (ALBCOM)

Josep Díaz EATCS Fellow 2017

Josep Díaz, Professor of Dept. of Computer Science and head of the ALBCOM research group, has been recognized as EATCS fellow for his important scientific contributions to complexity theory and to the design and analysis of algorithms in sequential, parallel and randomised computation models, and for his service to the theoretical computer science community.

The EATCS Fellows Program was established by the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science in 2014 to recognize outstanding EATCS members for their scientific achievements in the field of Theoretical Computer Science. FIB Alumni award to the best Degree Project

Josep Sànchez Ferreres, won the 2015-2016 FIB Alumni award to the best Degree Project.

The work, entitled Comparison of Textual and Formal descriptions of Processing Models consists of an algorithm for aligning sentences of a textual description with the corresponding tasks of a formal process model, represented as a graph. The algorithm associates a similarity degree to the description pair, allowing the  detection of inconsistences between them. The project was co-directed by professors Josep Carmona and Lluís Padró of the Computer Science Department.

The NBA Sixers opt for fiber Sergi Oliva

The Fiber Sergi Oliva has been named director of analytical and innovation team the Sixers to the NBA.
